The Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Associatio­n will meet today at 10:30 a.m. at the Vann House, 82 Georgia Highway 225, Chatsworth, to commemorat­e the 180th anniversar­y of the Cherokee removal. Former Associatio­n President Leslie Thomas will be speaking about “The Round-up and Life in the Encampment­s.” The meeting is free and open to the public.

The Puryear Detachment 1020 of Marine Corps League will meet at 9 a.m. today at the Rome-Floyd County Library, 205 Riverside Parkway. James Thompson, commanding officer of a rifle platoon that was detached to protect the Guantanamo Naval Base during the Cuban Missile Crisis and executive officer of a Marine detachment aboard the U.S.S. Randolph assigned to the sea recovery area for the suborbital space flight of astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom in July 1961 and for America’s first Earth orbital flight by astronaut John Glenn, will be discussing his books on the history of Marine Corps decoration­s, medals, badges and insignia dating back to the start of World Word II.

The Armuchee Ruritan Club will host a car, truck and motorcycle show and swap meet today at 8 a.m. at Ridge Ferry Park, 363 Riverside Parkway. Registrati­on is $25 per vehicle and $10 each for vendors and car-corral participan­ts. Registrati­on will end at 11 a.m. The first 100 vehicles will receive dash plaques. The National Associatio­n of Letter Carriers Food Drive will be held today. The public is asked to bag healthy nonperisha­ble food and place them by your mailbox for letter carrier delivery to local food banks and pantries. Suggested food items include pasta, cereal, oatmeal, canola oil, peanut butter and canned goods including beans, fruit, vegetables, soup, tuna in water, meat and sauce. Avoid glass containers. One Community United and the Rome Art Coterie are sponsoring an art chal- lenge for the 2018 One Table event. Anyone interested in submitting art depicting the message of One Table should contact Nedra Manner in person at Yellow Door Antiques, 219 N. Fifth Ave., or via Facebook. The deadline will be June 1. Winning artwork will become the property of One Community United to use in promotiona­l material for One Table on Sept. 23.

The Coosa River Basin Initiative is seeking businesses and school, civic and church groups to participat­e in Rome’s Big Float on June 2. More than 1,000 people are needed to create a mile-long chain of inner tubes and inflatable­s. Regular registrati­on is $25, with children 12 and younger floating for free. Group registrati­on rates are available. Participan­ts receive a T-shirt, tube rental and shuttle service to and from the river. Afterward there will be food, music and games at Heritage Park. The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office will hold a charity golf tournament at Stonebridg­e Golf Club, 585 Stonebridg­e Drive, on

June 15 at 8:30 a.m. Entry is ongoing and costs $100 per person or $400 per team. The fee covers cart usage and lunch. Tournament sponsors are still needed. Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum will present “Sanctuary at Berry: Wildlife Photograph­y by Gena Flanigen” through Aug. 18. Berry faculty and community members will present lectures on whitetaile­d deer, the Berry College bald eagles, striped bass spawning and more. Habitat for Humanity Coosa Valley is accepting applicatio­ns for the “A Brush with Kindness” program. The program assists homeowners in Floyd County by painting and performing minor repairs on the exterior of their homes. The homeowner repays the cost of the materials and supplies through a nointerest loan. Applicatio­ns may be picked up at the ReStore, 95 Three Rivers Drive. There is a $10 fee for a background check. Homeowners will be required to make a 10-percent down payment.
