National Alliance on Mental Illness-Rome will offer the NAMI Smarts for Advocacy class “Medication: Protecting Choice” on Saturday from 12:302:30 p.m. at 1 Woodbine Ave. This free 2-hour class explores the medication dilemma facing people with mental illness including blockages that limit choice and access to frontline medication­s, the “try and fail” method to prescribe old line medication­s and other hindrances to modern mental health care. If you have a mental illness, are a family member, provider, caregiver or just want to learn more about this topic, consider taking this class. It will provide skills in order for you to prepare and deliver a short advocacy statement to local, state, and/or national decision makers. The Calhoun Area Writers will host the second Northwest Georgia

Writers Conference on Saturday at the Harris Arts Center, 212 S. Wall St., Calhoun. Author Karin Gillespie, who has written for the New York Times, Washington Post and Writer Magazine, will be the keynote speaker. The conference will include sessions on keys to great dialogue, recycling/reworking poetry, reasons people stop reading books and podcasting for writers. Other highlights include bookseller­s, door prizes and networking. Tickets are $65 for adult nonmembers and $50 for Calhoun Area Writers members and students.
