Sheriff investigating horse killing

-

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a horse that was shot last Friday.

According to an incident report, the complainant reported on Friday between 3 and 5 p.m. someone killed her horse. The deputy found an entry wound on the left side of the horse’s neck and two bullets on the right side of the neck that did not exit. He removed the bullets for evidence. The complainant said neighbors had been shooting in the area but in a statement on Tuesday, the deputies interviewed one of the neighbors and ruled him out as a suspect.

“One of the leads that investigators followed up on involved a neighbor ... who shoots and takes target practice frequently in the area,” Capt. Paul Woods said. “As a result of a preliminary interview and investigation into (the neighbor’s) actions and whereabouts, it was determined that (the neighbor) was not at home at the time the incident took place. (The neighbor) has been fully cooperative with the sheriff’s office, and he has been ruled out as a suspect in this case at this time.”

The report said the horse appeared to have broken its neck because of the way it fell to the ground. The deputy determined the horse had fallen when it was shot based on blood around the horse and the condition of the ground around the animal.

Woods said “investigators are following up on additional leads.” The Dalton Daily Citizen

Reardon was 17 when authorities say her SUV hit the trio trying to cross a Woodstock road. The baby died that night. The adults were hospitalized and later died.
