Do your part in the renewal

- NELSON PRICE The Rev. Nelson Price is pastor emeritus of Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta and a former chairman of the Shorter University board of trustees.

Iam pro education — public, private and Christian. I have boundless respect for the many exceptional educators and am pleased to have a daughter who is one. Some years ago, I did a personal review of the 25 most influential people in my growth and development. Seventeen were educators. However, I am not unmindful or naive of what is happening in our national educational system and why.

The roots of the stealth revolution that really took on new life in the ’60s can be traced as far back as 1923 when the Frankfurt School, a pro-Marxists group of free thinkers coalesced. It has since become known as the Institute for Social Research.

They concluded America could never be reduced to a society ripe for revolution without destroying certain sustaining values. The No. 1 objective of the group was to destroy confidence in the Bible and orthodox Christian values. Their concepts came to be known as Critical Theory.

One of the two critical components was to make a matrix of Marxism, Darwinism and Freudianism.

The second component of the Critical Theorists involved:

1) The depiction of the American culture as innately racist, sexist, imperialistic and consumer-obsessed. (How are they doing?)

2) The inclusion of the arts and popular culture into the cultural revolution. (Have you noted a seismic shift in these disciplines?)

3) The celebration of sexual liberation and the rejection of traditional moral values. (Is the picture getting clearer?)

What better place to seek to undermine the historical values of the West than the educational system. The creation of a valueless system and dumbing-down the population could have no more fertile field.

Before noting with what success this has been done, I want to first note our local educational system is far ahead of the nation in curtailing the efforts of the Critical Theorists.

The following factors indicate the ISR has achieved dramatic national success in the dumbing-down efforts.

In 2017, the National Assessment of Educational Progress reported only 37 percent of the 12th-graders tested proficient or better in reading and 25 percent in math. Nationally, our graduation rate in 80 percent. That means high school diplomas were issued to some students who can’t read or compute on a 12th-grade level.

The plot thickens when it comes to college. In 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 70 percent of white high school graduates and 58 percent of black students enrolled in college. If only 37 percent of white students test college-ready, why are 70 percent admitted to college? If roughly 17 percent of black students test college-ready why are 58 percent admitted to college?

Many colleges have adjusted their demands to accommodate students with analytical deficits and offer “special studies.” Even then there are challenges. Consider this true story. A college student enrolled in a course of Western Civilization and was shocked to learn it was not about cowboys and Indians.

Studies show when many of these students finish college, they still can’t perform on a 12th-grade level.

These underdeveloped students are vulnerable to the anti-establishment rhetoric of advocates of Critical Theory. The future of America is at risk. Only a return to the sustaining values that made America great can counter what is happening. Remember the ISR identified them for us as the Bible and orthodox Christian values.
