Top stars plan Rome visit for Doug Sanders tourney

Dean Martin, Danny Thomas and Andy Williams are expected to appear in Rome Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29 for the first annual “Doug Sanders Scholarship Fund Golf Exhibition and Show,” sponsored by the Rome Jaycees.

Tentative arrangements have been received from Bob Hope and Phil Harris to participate also in this event, according to Ron Woods, General chairman of the Jaycee project.

The tournament, proposed to be held annually in the state, is the idea of Sanders, a native of Cedartown who has won for himself a top spot among the world’s golfers.

The exhibition golf match will be held at the Coosa Country Club Saturday, Sept. 29. A sponsor’s dinner will be held Saturday night to be followed by an impromptu show at the City Auditorium.

Funds from the show and bath exhibition will be used to enable several Georgians to attend college in Georgia.

“I owe Georgia and many individuals a great deal and those who helped me become a success in my chosen profession, golf,” Sanders said. “I would like to repay that debt by making it possible for others, such as myself, who are in need of help at the college level.”

“I am sure that with the help of all local citizens we can make Rome and Floyd County proud to be chosen to host the first project of the Doug Sanders Scholarship Fund,” Woods said. “I hope everyone in Rome and Floyd County has the opportunity to see such celebrities as Dean Martin, Danny Thomas and Andy Williams.”
