Police: Officer drives ambulance as crew treats woman

ATHENS — Police in Georgia say an officer sent to a home where a woman was being attacked decided to drive the ambulance taking her to a hospital so medics could continue treating her injuries.

Athens-Clarke County police told news outlets Thursday that officers arrived at the 46-year-old’s home Sunday. Police spokesman Geof Gilland says her boyfriend beat her with a baseball bat and she was severely injured.

Gilland says officers detained 51-year-old Christopher Warden and began helping the wounded woman. He says one officer helped load her into an ambulance, recognized she needed immediate care and got into the driver’s seat while medics tended to her.

Warden remained jailed Thursday on aggravated assault and battery charges.
