‘Caine Mutiny,’ ‘Winds of War’ author Herman Wouk has died

Mrs. Jennie Marie Robinson Forsyth, age 80 of Rockmart passed away Friday, May 17, 2019.

She was born May 8, 1939 in Rockmart, daughter of the late C.O. “Mutt” Robinson and the late Lula Mae Cash Robinson. She worked in the insurance and real estate family business for over 40 years and a member of Bethel Crossroads Baptist Church. Mrs. Forsyth was a great cook and enjoyed her ÀRZHUV 6KH ORYHG WKH /RUG and her Church, but her greatest love was her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph Robinson and Rev. Carl Robinson and Rev. Donald “Bo” Robinson.

Survivors include her husband, Dan Forsyth of Rockmart to whom she was married August 21, 1960; three sons and daughtersi­n-law, Jon and Debbie Forsyth, Gary “Red” and Missy Forsyth and Lee and Tammy Forsyth all of Rockmart; three brothers, Dell Robinson of Taylorsvil­le and Ronnie Robinson and Rev. Dean Robinson both of &DVKWRZQ ¿YH JUDQGFKLOd­ren, Matt (Candice) Forsyth, Tyler Forsyth, Brittany Forsyth, Emily Forsyth and Emerson Forsyth; and four great-grandchild­ren, Judson Forsyth, Jhett Brantley, Tate Forsyth and Ace Forsyth.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 20, 2019 at 11am in Bethel Crossroads Baptist Church with her pastor, Rev. Charles Garrett and her nephew, Rev. Greg RobLQVRQ RI¿FLDWLQJ ,QWHUPHQW will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with her brother, Rev. 'HDQ 5RELQVRQ RI¿FLDWLQJ

NEW YORK — Herman Wouk, the versatile, Pulitzer Prize winning author of such million-selling novels as “The Caine Mutiny” and “The Winds of War” whose steady Jewish faith inspired his stories of religious values and secular success, died on Friday at 103.

Wouk was just 10 days shy of his 104th birthday and was working on a book until the end, said his literary agent Amy Rennert.

Mrs. Patricia Lillian “Pat” Holcomb, age 73, of Rome, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019, at a local nursing facility.

Mrs. Holcomb was born in Floyd County, GA on June 6, 1945, daughter of the late Roy “Gene” Mixon, Sr. and the late Lillian Allen Mixon. She was a graduate of West Rome High School and was a former employee of Western Sizzlin. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Tammy Peace (Rick), Kingston; a son, Ricky Shedd, Rome; a brother, Roy Mixon, Jr. (Evelyn), Rome; several grandchild­ren, great-grandchild­ren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Floyd Memory Gardens. The 5HY *HRUJH 1L[ ZLOO RI¿FLate.

TALLEY, Walton Frederick “Fred”

Walton Frederick “Fred” Talley, age 74, of Rome passed away Thursday May 16, 2019 in a local hospital.

Fred was born July 21, 1944, in Gordon County. He was a son of the late Walton S. “Jett” Talley, and Mattie Ridley Talley. Fred was a long time Funeral Director. With his brother Marvin, he owned and operated Talley Brothers Funeral Home for many years. After Talley Brothers sold, he opened Fred Talley’s Parkview Chapel on Shorter Avenue.

Fred served as Floyd County Coroner from 1972-1996; he was president of the Georgia Coroner’s Associatio­n in the early 1980’s. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome, Floyd Springs Masonic Lodge #167 F&AM. Fred was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was currently employed by Parnick Jennings, Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home at the time of his passing. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Talley, Marvin Talley.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Poole Talley, daughter, Allison Talley Holcomb, and 2 grandsons, Ridge Holcomb and Jesse Holcomb. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In keeping with Fred’s wishes, he will be cremated followed by a private entombment to be held at a later date.
