Fall Play: ‘The Crucible’
Darlington’s fine arts department and The Darlington Players presented Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” in the Zelle Black Box Theatre Nov. 7th through the 10th.
“The level of student ownership in this play really excited me,” said Shelley Daniel, Darlington theatre director. “This was our first studentdesigned set during my tenure and it was truly creative and innovative.”
Darlington senior Abby Burris from Cedartown, Ga. aspires to major in set design in college and fully designed the set for this play.
“Abby re-imagined the Black Box configuration and designed a set that is a giant metaphor of the play,” said Daniel. “The theater was turned into a thrust format, one that our actors have never worked in before. Two sides of the audience had a unique perspective, from jail cells. Their visibility was altered, which is entirely reflective of the character experiences. ”
The Upper School stagecraft class built the set and props while the lighting and sound teams did an amazing job of supporting this important production. Lighting was designed by Michael Hall (‘20) and Mary Prusakowski (‘22) and Leigh Barnes (‘20) designed the publicity artwork. All of the company headshots were taken by students in the media arts photography studio.
Daniel was also impressed with the depth shown by the cast as they tackle their roles.
“These were some of the hardest roles our actors have faced in recent memory,” she said. “Many were dream roles, requiring a tremendous amount of risk-taking, depth and vulnerability, and the actors did amazing work.”
