‘Follow the conductor’: East Central students take trip through time to learn about Black history
Left: In honor of Black History Month, East Central Elementary gifted teacher Gary Jones helped put together a virtual event that taught students about the bravery and persistence of Black heroes throughout American history. Below, Right: One of several stops on East Central’s trip through time illustrated the bravery and persistence of abolitionist and activist Harriet Tubman and her efforts with the Underground Railroad to free Black Americans held in slavery. Below, Left: The first station stop on East Central’s trip through history was the kindergarten classes, where each group gave a different presentation, complete with their own artwork. Several of the people they spoke of were pioneering baseball player Jackie Robinson, Vice President Kamala Harris, Martin Luther King Jr. and former President Barack Obama.
