Locals compete at Cedar Valley Invitational
Darlington girls, Dade County boys take team titles as players get in full 18
Five teams got together to compete at the Cedar Valley Invitational at Cedar Valley Golf Club in Cedartown on Saturday, and after 18 holes, it was the Darlington girls and Dade County boys that walked away with team titles.
The Lady Tigers finished atop the standings followed by runner-up Model on the girls side while Dade County edged out Model in the boys totals.
“(Robby) Silver established this tournament to give high school teams the opportunity to play 18 holes of golf leading up to area and state competitions,” said Pepperell head coach Alana Ellenburg. “He also wanted to provide a fun environment by giving the golfers a chance to win ‘closest to the pin’ and ‘longest drive’ competitions.”
Winning the longest drive contest was Ther Kotchasanmanee, and Malinda “MJ” Stewart won closest to the pin.
All-tournament Teams were also picked following the end of the action. Girls All-tournament Team members were Darlington’s Kotchasanmanee, Emma Jane Betty, Cinja Riener and Agatha Blocker and Model’s Georgia Womack. The Boys All-tournament Team consisted of Pepperell’s Elliott O’weger, Model’s Riley Chapman and Bryson Mcjunkin, Coosa’s Blaine Terry and Dade County’s Mason Weathers.
“Coaches had an opportunity to evaluate their players, both physically but especially mentally, as they played a complete round of 18 holes,” said Ellenburg. “Most all high school matches are nine-hole rounds because of time remaining after school until the sunsets. With the establishment of the Cedar Valley Invitational, Silver is hoping local golfers can prepare more for end-of-the-year tournaments.”
Local teams will play their area tournaments over the next month before sectionals and state will be held in May.
