Darlington takes series opener with strong finish

- From staff reports

The Darlington Tigers finished the game strong on Monday, scoring five runs in the final three innings, to earn a 7-5 victory on the road at Chattooga in the opener of a three-game region series this week.

Darlington (11-9, 10-3 in 7-A Division I) trailed 3-2 going to the fifth inning but got the bats going with one run in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead before holding off a late rally attempt by Chattooga, which scored two runs in the final half inning.

The bottom of the lineup came up big in the win for the Tigers with Myles Twyman and Evan Parton each contributing two hits and an RBI, including a double from Twyman. Jacob Johnson also had a double and two RBIS.

Rounding out the offensive efforts were Talan Shirey with a hit and an RBI and Bagley Larry with two walks and an RBI.

Julian Lowery got the win for Darlington after pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Trenton Moore also pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits with nine walks.

“It was a hard-fought win against a very scrappy Chattooga team,” said Darlington head coach Matt Larry. “Their guy did a great job getting out of jams and keeping us from adding multiple runs in an inning. Trenton did well, just didn’t get some plays to go his way. Julian had a Herculean effort

on the mound coming in the game in a sticky situation then holding them off the rest of the way. Proud of the bottom of the lineup stepping up at the plate tonight and coming through when we needed them most.”

Darlington will host Chattooga on Thursday at 4 p.m. before the two teams wrap up the three-game set on Friday

back at Chattooga at 5:30 p.m.
