Rome girls, Darlington boys win at Floyd-gordon track meet

Ƈ Lady Wolves, Tigers grab team titles at Floyd/gordon Border Battle at Calhoun High

Bragging rights were on the line on Wednesday as teams from two neighborin­g counties got together to compete in the Floyd-gordon Border Battle at Calhoun High, but it was the Rome girls and Darlington boys that walked away as big winners.

The Lady Wolves had an impressive day overall to run away with the top spot in the team standings with 181 points, 62 better than second-place Model. Other local schools in the girls standings were fifth-place Armuchee (70), sixth-place Darlington (61.5), seventh-place Pepperell (28) and eighth-place Coosa (15).

Over on the boys side it was Darlington that had the most balanced performanc­e to compile 158.33 points, edging out Calhoun (135.33) for the top spot as a team. Rome was third with 115 points followed by Model in fourth with 102.5.

Rounding out the schools from Floyd County in the boys standings were Pepperell (sixth, 43), Armuchee (seventh, 36) and Coosa (eighth, 20).

The Rome girls had 10 total firstplace finishes, including two each from Christa Ellis, Elise Wooddell and Mackenzie Hight. Ellis won the 200 meter (26.84 seconds) and 400 (1 minute, 1.73 seconds), Wooddell won the 800 (2:29.84) and 1600 (5:27.78) and Hight won the 100 hurdles (15.35) and 300 hurdles (46.01).

Other top finishes for the Lady Wolves came from Christionn­a Maxwell in the 100 dash (13.20), Jaida Edwards in the high jump (5 feet), Miya Winston in the long jump (17 feet, 3/4 inches) and the 4x100 relay team (51.17) to go with 11 other top-five finishes.

Model’s girls were led by first-place finishes from three separate relay teams as they won the 4x200 (1:47.16), 4x400 (4:25.31) and 4x800 (10:27.29). Reagan Orr also grabbed the top spot in the pole vault with a 9-0 to go with 12 other top-five finishes for the Lady Devils.

The Armuchee Lady Indians were led by Marissa Kimple who won the 3200 meter with a time of 12:19.08. The team had eight other top-five finishes.

Emma Hunt had the lone first-place finish for the Darlington girls in the triple jump with an effort of 38-07.5. The Lady Tigers had 10 other top-five finishes.

Pepperell’s girls had two top-five finishes while Coosa had one.

On the boys’ side, Darlington’s impressive day as a team included nine first-place finishes with Link Lignell accounting for two as he won the pole vault (12-3) and the 400 (50.13).

Other event winners included Anthony Natarella in the 800 (2:02.98), Grant Cross in the 1600 (4:43.85), Brock Ferguson in the 3200 (10:09.66), Joseph Wommack in the triple jump (41-8.5), the 4x200 relay team (1:30.53), the 4x400 relay team (3:33.81) and the 4x800 relay team (8:36.95). The Tigers had nine other top-five finishes.

Rome’s boys were led by speedster Antwion Carey who took home first-place

finishes in both the 100 dash (10.94) and 200 dash (22.57). The Wolves’ other top finish came from the 4x100 relay team (43.14) to go with 12 other top-five finishes.

The Model boys got a pair of first-place efforts from Jeremias Heard in the discus (143-9) and shot put (51-9.5). The Devils had 10 other top-five finishes.

The Pepperell boys were led by Hayden Jones who had the team’s lone firstplace finish in the high jump with a 6-00. The Dragons had four other topfive finishes.

Armuchee’s boys had five top-five finishes while the Coosa boys had three, including Xander Sledge winning the long jump with a 20-1.25.

Rome, Coosa and Pepperell will all next compete on Friday at the Friday Night Lights of Rome Meet at Barron Stadium starting at 5 p.m.

Model will host a meet for its next competitio­n on April 16 while Darlington will also host a meet on April 16 starting at 4 p.m. that includes Armuchee in the field of teams.
