Medical equipment repair firm moves to bigger location

SAN JOSE >> A company that repairs high-tech medical equipment has moved to a San Jose site where it expects to employ several hundred people and accommodate its push into hiring mode.

Olympus Surgical Technologies of America has opened a new complex in south San Jose, where the company will be able to employ 700 workers and potentially hire even more.

The employees at the south San Jose complex repair “lifesaving equipment,” said company President Jorge Lopes. In recent weeks, Olympus staged a ribbon-cutting event to formally mark the opening of the new site.

“We hope this event and this expanded facility will make clear how important these service workers are to Olympus, to San Jose and to the medical community and the patients it serves,” Lopes said.

Olympus executives also believe the complex, which Olympus says is larger than the company's prior location in the area, will enable employees to have more room to operate — an important consideration in the coronavirus era.

The new location totals 130,000 square feet, compared with the 80,000 square feet where the company had operated in north San Jose, according to a representative for Olympus. That works out to an increase in building size of about 63%.

San Jose city officials embraced the new operation and hailed the anticipated expansion prospects for Olympus.

“Olympus has been an important employer in the city of San Jose for more than 40 years, and an early leader in our biotech industry sector,” said Nanci Klein, the city's director of economic development.

The company said it anticipates plenty of demand for the services and capabilities that it will be able to offer at the new location.

“The new site is indicative of our growing workload and the future growth we expect to see,” Lopes said.

The company, in Klein's view, has a good track record when it comes to hiring and keeping employees.

“Olympus attracts talented workers and retains them for decades,” Klein said.

The expected demand for Olympus' services and skills might leave the company well positioned to add to its local workforce, the company said.

The recent opening event was a way to put its workers' capabilities front and center, according to Lopes.

“Olympus is hiring and this is a great opportunity to showcase the quality of these jobs,” Lopes said.
