San Jose man arrested on suspicion of possessing explosives

SAN JOSE >> Authorities on Jan. 18 announced an arrest in connection with the discovery of a “functional homemade destructive device” near a city councilmember's home in San Jose a year and a half ago.

The bomb was found June 14, 2022, near Delmas and Coe avenues in the city's Atlanta Bird neighborhood, San Jose police Officer Steve Aponte said in a news release. Its location was near the home of Devora “Dev” Davis, who represents District 6 in the City Council.

The San Jose Police Department bomb squad seized the device, which appeared to be cylindrical in shape and wrapped in duct tape. It then was rendered safe and booked into evidence.

Following a lengthy investigation, detectives identified a 33-year-old San Jose man as a suspect in the case and obtained a warrant for his arrest, according to Aponte.

On Jan. 16, detectives located and arrested the man, identified as Andres Navarro. They also served a search warrant at his home and found a “field guide for improvised explosives,” Aponte said.

Police did not release any other information about the case, including the suspect's possible motive.

The man was booked into Santa Clara County jail on a charge of possession of destructive devices or explosives.

He remained in custody Jan. 18, online jail records showed.
