Orion Veterans Memorial starts to fall apart

- By Sharon Longman For MediaNewsGroup

The marble walls of the Orion Veterans Memorial are starting to come off after eight years in place.

On March 7, the American Legion Riders from Oxford Post 108 presented a check to the Orion Veterans Memorial to help pay for the repairs to the memorial’s marble walls. The wall panels are starting to come off due to weather. The estimated cost to repair the 14 panels is $17,000.

Donations for repair can be sent to the Orion Veterans Memorial, 189 W. Clarkson Road, Box 4, Lake Orion, 48362. Note Memorial Walls on the memo line.

The Orion Veterans Memorial is a nonprofit and donations are tax deductible. For more information, call Jim Hubbard at 248-496-1213.

MVAA encourages veterans to guard against coronavirus

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is approaching this emerging threat to public health with an abundance of caution working closely with state and federal agencies to address the coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Always share accurate information about a virus and how it spreads. It is important to remember that stigma and discrimination occur when people associate an infectious disease, such as

COVID-19, with a population or nationality. COVID-19 does not target people from specific populations, ethnicities or racial background. Suspected discrimination can be reported to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. For the latest information, frequently visit Michigan.gov/Coronavirus or CDC.gov/ Coronavirus.

The Oakland Press is interested in all veterans events in Oakland County. Please send info in the body of an email with subject line “Veterans Affairs” to Sharon Longman at sslstart@aol.com. Allow two weeks’ notice for scheduled events and include a phone number for readers to call for more information
