102 more COVID-19 related deaths reported

Michigan has now seen more than 52,000 cases of infections related to the coronaviru­s.

On Tuesday afternoon, the death total rose to 5,017, along with 52,350 cases overall.

There were 435 new cases reported Tuesday by the state with 102 new deaths. Last Tuesday, May 12, the state reported 469 cases and 90 deaths.

Where we stand now

Overall, Detroit is still the community with the most cases, with 10,417 cases and 1,276 deaths, while the rest of Wayne County has 8,875 cases and 999 deaths.

Oakland County has 8,078 cases and 928 deaths.

Macomb County has 6,367 cases and 753 deaths.

Genesee County has 1,891 cases and 235 deaths.

Washtenaw County has 1,251 cases and 89 deaths.

The Michigan prison system has 3,122 cases and 60 deaths.

In mid-Michigan, Isabella County has 62 cases and 7 deaths, Clare County has 15 cases and 2 deaths and Gratiot County has 50 cases and 4 deaths.

Breaking down data

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing. On Sunday, the latest data avail

able, there were 1,275 positive results for the COVID-19 virus, or 9.4%, from 13,539 total specimens tested.

Overall, the coronaviru­s remains deadliest to older people, especially men.

The average age of those killed is 75.3 years old and the median age of those killed is 77. While men make up 47 percent of overall cases, they make up 53 percent of those killed.

Those 80 and older make up 42 percent of deaths. Those aged 7079 make up 27 percent of deaths and those aged 6069 years old make up 18 percent.

There have been approximat­ely 11.8 million tests conducted in the U.S. Michigan ranks 8th on the list with 410,178 tested, well behind New York’s 1,439,557 and California’s 1,292,672.

New developmen­ts

On Monday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-92, which allows for the reopening in two regions of retail businesses, office work that cannot be done remotely and restaurant­s and bars with limited seating. The two regions are in the northern part of the state.

The partial reopening will take effect on Friday, May 22. The order does not stop cities, villages and townships from restrictin­g the operations of restaurant­s or bars if they see fit.

Disease in context

Worldwide, the number of deaths topped 321,459, and the number of cases is over 4.8 million, according to coronaviru­s researcher­s at Johns Hopkins University. Italy, Spain, France and the United Kingdom all have more than 27,000 deaths.

In the United States, the total number of confirmed cases has topped 1.5 million, standing Tuesday at 1,519,986 total cases with 91,179 deaths.
