Local helpers during coronaviru­s crisis in Oakland County

Credit union donates $10,000 toward face shields for first responders

Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU) donated $10,000 to support the effort to distribute 30,000 face shields to local first responders, hospital staff, and nursing and senior home personnel.

Thousands of face shields have already been donated to local hospitals and emergency service department­s including Detroit Medical Center, Detroit VA, Garden City Hospital, Ascension Genesys Hospital, McLaren Hospital Flint, McLaren Oakland Hospital, Birmingham Fire Department, and several nursing homes.

Additional­ly, MSGCU team members have distribute­d 2,000 shields to first responders, including: Commerce Township Fire Department, DMC Huron Valley Hospital, Farmington Hills Police Department, Farmington Public Safety (Police and Fire), Hazel Park Police Department, Highland Fire Department, Madison Heights Fire Department, Madison Heights Police Department, Milford Police Department, Royal Oak Police Department, St. Clair Shores Fire Department – EMS, Sterling Heights Police Department, Superior Air Ground Universal Macomb, Walled Lake Fire Department and West Bloomfield Police Department.

The Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) is providing a $10,000 matching grant through its Community Crisis Support Grant program to supplement these efforts. This grant will continue the distributi­on of additional shields to much-needed areas including funeral homes, nursing homes and assisted living centers.

MSGCU is also helping members experienci­ng financial hardship due to the coronaviru­s with low-interest loans, flexible loan payment options and by offering financial counseling.

Library offers virtual presentati­on about PPP Loans

Salem-South Lyon District Library is offering informatio­nal virtual presentati­ons by a financial advisor, May 20. The first will cover PPP Loans at 6:30 p.m. The second, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., covers the CARES Act and Emergency Paid Leave Act of 2020. The presentati­ons can be attended by either watching the Facebook Livestream, www.facebook. com/ssldl or through Zoom after registerin­g through the library’s website, www. ssldl.info. Recordings will be made available for future viewing on the South Lyon Community Television Channel and the library’s website. Future scheduled speakers include local experts and nationally known authors. The Annual Summer Reading program will be offered online, starting June 7, with activities and virtual services throughout the summer for all ages.

Like many businesses, the Turtle Creek Farm in

Waterford has seen a drastic drop in revenue. Lucy Clucas, the owner of Turtle Creek Farm has been educating children and adults about animals and the earth in the area for years. The COVID-19 outbreak has halted bookings for camps, field trips and birthday parties, according to an email. A GoFundMe campaign was created on behalf of Turtle Creek Farm.
