Mercy’s Chloe Vig sinks two aces in a week
There were going to be plenty of whispers and finger pointing Friday at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing.
For those who have never seen Farmington Hills Mercy’s Chloe Vig, they were going to be looking to get a glimpse of the golfer ... the myth, the legend, at the Division 2 Girls Golf Finals.
Vig is a very unassuming high school student. She’s not one to seek out attention. She likes to just go about her business. But when you hit not one, but two holes-in- one in a span of five days — both in competitive play, no less — the spotlight is going to be headed your way.
That’s exactly what Vig did late last month while playing for her Marlins golf team. They both tookplace on the same course, the
South Course at theDetroit GolfClub. Thefirst came on Sept. 24— which happened to be her 16th birthday — during a Catholic League
match against Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook- Kingswood. She aced the 128yard No. 5.
“It was kind of a blind par- 3,” Mercy head golf coach Vicky Kowalski explained. “She couldn’t see it, but the kids in the group in front of her were on their
way to thenext tee and they saw it go in. They started screaming and yelling.”
As if that shot wasn’t good enough, she repeated the effort four days later during the Catholic League Championship. This time it was on the 92-yard 17th hole.
“I saw it. There was kind of a back-up on 18 and it was on 17,” Kowalski said. “I saw the ball hit the green W and start rolling towards the hole and I said, ‘ Boy, that should be a nice birdie putt.’ And all of a sudden the ball disappears. We’re all yelling. But (Chloe) picks
her tee up and puts it in her pocket. She didn’t see it go in.”
hile everyone surrounding her was celebrating her seemingly unimaginable feat, Vig took it in stride. To this day, she’s still not sure it has really “sunk in” yet.
