The nonprofit Council Re|Sale shop in Berkley is having deep discount events to help those struggling with finances stay warm.

The shop at 3297 W. 12 Mile Road is one of the oldest resale shops in metro Detroit.

Today through Nov. 21 the shop is having a winter coat sale with 75 percent off all coats.

Following that the shop will thank its customers with a 50-percent- off sale on all non- designer items from Nov. 23-28.

The sale events are in response to rising unemployment rates caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a statement from the National Council of Jewish Women chapter in Michigan.

The NCJW is a volunteer and social advocacy organization that operates Council Re|Sale.

According to September figures, Michigan had lost 448,000 jobs due to COVID-19, and 12,862 jobless claims were filed statewide in the last week of October alone.

“So many local families are affected by unemployment and financial stress right now, so we wanted to make sure that everyone could keep warm at a great price,” said Amy Cutler, president of the National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan, in a statement. “Many of our customers are extremely loyal, so our Thanksgiving sale is just a way to say ‘ Thank You’ and give customers a chance to shop at affordable prices.”

The shop is known to bargain hunters for having high- end clothing, including designer wear, and other items.

Council Re| Sale was forced to close at the start of the pandemic to keep staff and customers safe. But the store reopened in July after putting safety measures in place, including sanitation stations, quarantining of donations and returns, and social distancing by staff and customers, who are all required to wear masks.

Only 10 people are allowed in the store at a time.

Council Re|Sale opened originally in Detroit in 1934. Funds raised go to many projects NCJW|MI runs to benefit families in metro Detroit, such as the Back 2 School Store, backpacks for homeless children, blankets for foster children, Kosher Meals on Wheels, and literacy outreach.

The shop in Berkley is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Clothing donations are accepted each day the store is open from 10 a. m. to 4 p.m.
