Physical education teachers recognized nationally
Two Walled Lake educators have been named Teacher of the Year by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America.
Bob Marijanovich of Keith Elementary School was named the SHAPE Michigan Elementary Teacher of the Year. Brad Scheck of Walled Lake Western High School was named the SHAPE Michigan High School Teacher of the Year.
Marijanovich said he wanted to dedicate his award to his late father, who inspired and introduced him to sports. He was nominated by Michelle Brandon, Walled Lake Schools’ physical education/health department chair, and Jeff Stevenson of Waterford Schools.
Stevenson said, “When I was hired in WLCSD, Bob took on the role of mentor. He would reach out to me every week to make sure I had the resources and support I needed. As a first year teacher, this help was crucial for my success in teaching physical education. Bob is a role model for not only his students but he is a role model for his colleagues and
friends.”
Scheck said it’s a big deal to him to receive this recognition for helping kids on their lifelong physical fitness journey.
He was also nominated by Brandon, who said, “Brad not only participates in school and district professional development meetings, he is often the one that plans and facilitates them as well. He has run department, school and district
professional development sessions that have helped staff learn new skills that has helped them become better, more well-rounded, educators.”
The awards were presented at the SHAPE-MI Virtual Award Recognition Ceremony, held on Thursday, Nov. 19. Watch online at bit.ly/2020shapeawards.
