CHRISTMAS GIFTS Big names, big titles roll out for the holiday
Christmas is always a big time at the movies, and despite this year’s ups and (mostly) downs, we have some big titles, with big-name stars, for the holiday — in theaters and streaming at home.
• “Wonder Woman 1984”: Gal Gadot’s Amazonian badass is back, nearly 70 years later in plot terms and not showing a minute of her age. In theaters and via HBO Max on Friday, Dec. 25.
• “Soul”: Pixar’s 23rd features the voices of Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey in this lighthearted, metaphysical look at how new souls are formed in The Great Before. On Disney+ starting Friday, Dec. 25.
• “The Midnight Sky”: George Clooney is stranded in the Arctic, trying to prevent a crew of astronauts from returning to an Earth destroyed by a mysterious global catastrophe. On Netflix.
• “News of the World”: Tom Hanks is a post-Civil War nomad charged with transporting a 10-year-old girl raised by Kiowa tribe back to her biological parents. In theaters starting Friday, Dec. 25.
• “Promising Young Woman”: Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham and Laverne Cox star in this revenge tale about a woman leading a double life. Starting Friday, Dec. 25, in theaters.
• “Sylvie Love”: Jazz and proximity helps
bring two musicians together ideologically and romantically in 1957 New York. Starting Sunday, Dec. 27, on Amazon Prime Video.
• “Christmas Hero”: This modern take on “It’s a Wonderful Life” features a young disillusioned war vet, home from Afghanistan, in this sentimental faith-based independent film shot in the Kalamazoo Air Zoo with a Michigan cast and crew. It’s available on Amazon Prime, Apple+ and other on-demand services. Visit achristmashero.com.
