State adds nearly 2,300 new cases

There were 250 new confirmed cases of virus and 13 deaths reported in Oakland County Tuesday, 141 cases and 19 deaths in Macomb County, 267 cases and 11 deaths in Wayne County, and 75 cases and seven deaths in Detroit.

Confirmed coronavirus cases in Michigan rose 2,291 Tuesday, bringing the total for the state since the pandemic began to 504,410.

The state also reported 189 new deaths, but 117 were from a search of vital records that seeks to resolve cases and deaths of unknown origin or location.

The latest state numbers suggest a moderation in the number of cases and deaths statewide as vaccines begin to be slowly administered and the state government lobbies for more federal aid to a newly seated Congress and a presidential inauguration in two weeks.

The numbers continue to be highest in the more populated southeast Michigan region with other relatively hot pockets around the state.

Elsewhere in the state, there were 75 cases and 10 deaths in Genesee County, 44 cases and 10 deaths in Saginaw County, 260 cases and four deaths in Kent County, and 49 cases and 10 deaths in Berrien County.

In rural mid Michigan, Clare County reported eight cases and two deaths, Gratiot County had one case and one death, and Isabella County had 13 cases and two deaths.

Meanwhile, a slow rollout of a vaccine to the virus continues.

As of Monday, the state had inoculated 379,325 people, including 57,735 in Oakland County, 16,850 in Wayne County, and 16,000 in Macomb County.

The state has cautioned residents to continue to wear masks and practice social distancing, and a widespread availability of the vaccine may not be available for months yet.
