Women’s Club asks for MLK Day donations
The Royal Oak Woman’s Club is asking for donations of items to distribute as part of the club’s Martin Luther King Day service work.
“The first day we’re taking donations is on Martin Luther King Jr. Day” on Monday, Jan. 18, from noon to 6 p.m., said Lisa Breuer, an ROWC vice president. “The items will be going to four organizations we’ve worked with in the past.”
Donations can be dropped off at the ROWC clubhouse at 404 S. Pleasant St. at Fourth Street.
“We’ll have signs up and bins along the south side of the clubhouse,” Breuer said, “and there will be bins for each of the four organizations.”
New and gently used shoes of all sizes and styles will be collected for Soles4Soles, while Welcome Inn Day Center needs new, disposable, self- activating hand warmers and athletic socks.
Donations of new, small coloring books, crayons, toothpaste and child-sized toothbrushes will go to Operation Smile and the John D. Dingell VA Medical
The center needs all new hairbrushes, travel-size toiletries, nail clippers and lip balm.
Donors can also drop off items at the ROWC clubhouse from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23.
ROWC volunteers in past years have taken part in other service day events, which have become impracticable because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Breuer said.
“This is a contactless way to give back to the community while honoring the legacy of Dr. King,” said Club President Sylvia Sopata. “We invite members of the public to join us in this effort.”
About 50 to 60 of the ROWC members will volunteer to get the donations collected and delivered to each of the four nonprofit groups.
Founded in 1902, the Royal Oak Woman’s Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service by promoting good citizenship, supporting education, and promoting and participating in civic activities.
