New cases top 5,000 on Tuesday

State on cusp of hitting 800K total infections

New coronaviru­s cases in Michigan topped 5,000 again Tuesday after averaging below that the previous two days.

The state health department announced 5,259 new cases of the virus and 85 deaths, of which 33 were found after a review of state vital records.

In all, Michigan has had 799,140 confirmed cases and 16,986 deaths since the pandemic began more than a year ago.

Daily case counts remain relatively high in the more populated areas of the state, particular­ly southeast Michigan, which accounted for 49.15% of the new cases and 47% of the deaths.

There were 800 cases and five deaths in Macomb County, 674 cases and eight deaths in Wayne County, 615 cases and 10 deaths in Oakland County, and 496 cases and 17 deaths in Detroit.

Other hotspots around the state Tuesday included Kent County with 357 cases and five deaths, Genesee County with 255 cases and eight deaths, Kalamazoo County with 144 cases and one death, and St. Clair County with 136 cases and four deaths.

In mid Michigan, there were 38 cases in Isabella County, 12 cases in Gratiot County, and 11 cases in Clare County.

Four of the state’s 83 counties

had no new cases or deaths.

Health providers have completely vaccinated 2,547,645 people age 16 and older against the virus or 31.5%, including 34.62%

in Oakland County, 32.78% in Wayne County, 29.21% in Macomb County, and 17.44% in Detroit.

The state estimates that 45.6% of the state’s population age 16 and older have had at least one dose of the two-dose vaccine. The state’s goal is to vaccinate 70%.
