Man charged for home burglary, gun possession
A Detroit man is charged with first-degree home invasion and multiple felony gun charges after police say they arrested the suspect and found he had a loaded handgun he stole.
Michael Davis, 26, was arraigned Thursday in Ferndale 43rd District Court and jailed on $100,000 cash bond.
A homeowner heard a noise inside his house in the 200 block of East Chesterfield after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
He went into a back room at the house, found a laptop computer had been stolen and called 911.
Police said they set up a perimeter in the area with help from other nearby police departments.
About two hours later, police
said, they found Davis hiding in a bush in the 300 block of Spencer.
“Officers recovered the stolen laptop and a handgun that was stolen from an unlocked car in the 300 block of East Chesterfield,” said Ferndale police Officer Jillian Mahlmeister.
“Our investigation showed he broke into several cars in the neighborhood near where the home invasion happened.”
On parole, Davis got out of prison last year and has previous convictions for home invasion and thefts from vehicles in Wayne County, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records.
He is also out on bond related to thefts from autos in
Royal Oak last September and was wearing an electronic tether when he was arrested.
Mahlmeister said police found the stolen loaded handgun beneath the suspect when he was hiding.
Davis is accused of dropping the laptop he stole in the burglary as he fled from officers.
The suspect made no comments and was not interviewed by police.
Davis was sentenced to serve five to 20 years in prison after he was convicted of first-degree home invasion in Wayne County in 2015.
At his arraignment Davis requested a court-appointed attorney.
If he is released from jail on bond he is prohibited from having any contact with the people at the home he is charged with burglarizing, or the person at the
address where the handgun was stolen.
Davis is also charged with two counts of possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony, a twoyear felony; a count of stealing a firearm, a five-year felony; and being a felon in possession of firearm, a fiveyear felony.
He is due back in Ferndale District Court at 1 p.m. Aug. 12 for a probable cause conference.
