Myre’s desire to be a leader shined through

- By Drew Ellis dellis@medianewsgroup.com

Tate Myre was in the early stages of embarking on a bright future before his life was tragically ended on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old junior at Oxford High School was a standout athlete for the Wildcats, an AllState football candidate and two-time state qualifier in wrestling.

Just this past weekend, Myre took a recruiting visit to the University of Toledo, who had shown interest in Myre playing for them in the fall of 2023.

Tate was the third Myre son to come through the Oxford athletic program. Trent was a 2019 graduate, while Tye graduated in 2021. They are the sons of Buck and Shari Myre.

“Tate Myre was a prodigious person. He was the kid who looked out for and was kind to all others. I remember back to when Tate was a freshman and how remarkable and outstanding his leadership qualities were,” said Armada principal Jordan Ackerman, who was athletic director at Oxford from 2017 until the summer of 2021.

“It is very rare, and almost non-existent, to see seniors following the lead of a freshman, but this was certainly the case with Tate. Tate’s attitude, drive, and moral compass were a direct reflection of his amazing parents and two older brothers who are also some of the best leaders and people I have had the honor to work with. While Tate will most definitely be remembered for his athletic ability, his legacy will live on because he was such an amazing person who made everyone around him better. The community here in Armada is thinking and praying hard for the Myres and every individual affected by this horrible tragedy.”

Since Tuesday’s tragedy, there has been an outpouring of social media posts about Myre and the impact he had on his teammates and classmates at Oxford High School.

Myre’s desire to be a leader was evident, as he disclosed in a profile interview with The DZone, a prep football and basketball website that highlights Michigan athletes.

“In my opinion to succeed in high school football you have to work hard and be dedicated to what you are doing. You have to be committed. Some goals of mine are to become captain of my high school football team for the remainder of my high school years. I plan to be a leader not only vocally but quietly,” Myre said. “I also plan to be seen as a leader on and off the football field to encourage my teammates to follow me. Some accomplishments of mine are getting pulled up to play on varsity as a freshman and getting named 2020 OAA All-League my sophomore year. I was also on leadership council for my high school football team my sophomore season.”

Myre was named a captain for the 2021 season, where he helped the Wildcats to a 6-5 record and a playoff win over Clarkston. Myre was named All-OAA Red and All-Region for his efforts this season, which saw him account for 738 yards of offense and 10 touchdowns as a tight end. He also had 71.5 tackles as a linebacker.

Myre was also a standout student with a 3.9 GPA and an Academic All-OAA honoree.

A petition has been started to rename Wildcat Stadium at Oxford, “Tate Myre Stadium” in honor of Myre. The petition indicates that Myre was killed while attempting to disarm the shooter on Tuesday, though police officials have not confirmed that. The petition currently has nearly 50,000 signatures.
