Oakland County’s top 50 players

- By Scott Burnstein

Get the cameras ready for a lot of highlight-reel plays on the court in Oakland County this season.

The 2021-22 boys basketball season will feature some of the best the state has to offer right here in the area.

Here’s the top names to keep an eye on this season.

1. Javaughn Hannah (Orchard St. Mary’s 6-4 Sr. G) — Signed with Western Michigan, Hannah averaged 25 points per game as a freshman and sophomore at Mt. Clemens before playing on the prep school circuit last season with Ypsilanti Prep. Expect Hannah to be in contention for Mr. Basketball.

2. Curtis Williams (Birmingham Brother Rice 6-6 Jr. F) — The top prospect in the state’s junior class, Williams is a silky smooth small forward with all the tools for greatness. He averaged 16 points per game last season. Alabama and Maryland are the colleges in the hottest pursuit right now.

3. Trey Lewis (Ferndale 6-5 Sr. G) — Signed with Loyola, Lewis can score effortlessly at all three levels and pumped in 22 points per game last winter. He averaged 24 points per night as a sophomore and diversified his game in 2021.

4. Cooper Craggs (Novi Detroit Catholic Central 6-7 Sr. F) — Signed with Oakland University, Craggs averaged 20 points and 10 boards a night last year and is the most lethal inside-outside threat in the area.

5. Kareem Rozier (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 5-9 Sr. G) — Committed to Duquesne, Rozier is the purest point guard in the state. The spunky and smart 5-foot-9 demon floor general dropped in 16 points a game to go along with 6 assists while connecting on 50 percent of his 3-point bombs last season.

6. Trey McKenney (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 6-4 Fr. G) — The most heralded freshman to grace Oakland County since NBA Hall of Famer, Chris Webber, McKenney has a half-dozen power-conference DI college scholarship offers already and should be an impact player in the CHSL right away.

7. Xavier Thomas (Birmingham Brother Rice 6-5 Jr. F) — Just a force of nature in every way, Thomas is a bulldog “point forward” type who can score, distribute from the high post, and shoot it from downtown with ease. Think Oakland County’s own version of NBA All-Star Draymond Green but with a higher motor. He posted 16 points, 10m boards and 4 assists per game as a sophomore.

8. John Blackwell (Birmingham Brother Rice 6-5 Jr. G) — The quintessential new age big guard, Blackwell can run an offense, set up his teammates with pinpoint precision passing and go wild in the open floor on the break. Wisconsin offered him at the end of the summer. His dad played in the Big Ten at Illinois in the 1980s.

9. Jason “Deuce” Drake (Ferndale 6-1 Sr. G) — Everything you want in a coldblooded combo guard, Drake is fierce in the halfcourt set and can finish in transition with the best around. In his first year in the OAA last season following a transfer from OLSM, he averaged 18 points per game and helped take Ferndale to the D2 state semifinals.

10. Gunner Walters (Rochester Adams 6-0 Sr. G) — Coming back from North Carolina, Waters returns into the fold at Adams (where he was a standout as a freshman in 2019) and will be one of the area’s most exciting players this winter. Last year, he averaged 17 points and 5 assists a night. His dad is retired NBA vet Rex Walters.
