‘WORKHORSE’

West Bloomfield ace Logan Pikur purring from the bump, plate in ’22

- By Scott Burnstein

West Bloomfield junior hurler Logan Pikur is a force of nature on the mound. The poise. The pinpoint precision. The velocity. The Craftiness.

It’s all there.

Exhibit A: Pikur, one of the top aces in Oakland County, spun a beauty over the weekend to blank defending Division 1 state champ Grand Blanc 3-0. Working five innings of three-hit ball, he struck out seven Bobcat batters to push his record on the young season to 4-1.

“The kid is a workhorse,” said West Bloomfield skipper Josh Birnberg of Pikur’s prowess chucking the pill. “He just always seems to come through in the biggest moments and at the most opportune times in the game. His teammates have the ultimate confidence in him on the hill and at the plate. Logan rakes with a bat in his hands. He does it all and we’re lucky to have him for the next two years.”

Displaying his lethal versatility on the diamond, Pikur went 3-for-4 with three RBI at the dish Saturday versus Grand Blanc. He’s hitting .400 and flashing a 0.80 ERA.

Proving a sign of things to come, Pikur pitched a gem in the Lakers’ season opener, a 10-4 victory over Waterford Kettering in an OAA-LVC crossover where he fanned eight. The 3-for-4, two-RBI effort with the stick was a sight to see as well.

Pikur committed to play his college baseball at Central Michigan back in the fall. He plays his summer and fall ball with the DBack Elite.

Birnberg’s Lakers squad was 12-4 entering OAA Red league action this week.

Keeping the crown in town

Oakland County saw its’ second straight 3-point shooting contest champion in as many years crowned earlier this month at the Mitten Classic Boys Basketball All-Star when Lake Orion senior forward Alden Ritt won the trophy. The 6-foot-8 Grand Valley State-signee Ritt led Lake Orion to an OAA White title in the winter.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s alum (Class of ’21) Will Smythe scorched the competition in the contest at last spring’s event. Smythe plays his college ball at Loyola (IL).
