Freedom to choose
I am writing because I support Proposal 3. I’m a 59-year-old divorced mother of three twentysomething sons. I have lived in Michigan since I was a freshman in high school. I grew up middle class — my parents may say differently — but if we struggled, I didn’t know it. I graduated from Grand Valley with a bachelor’s degree in public administration before it was known as a university. The point is: I have always had choices.
As a Christian, I believe in Jesus Christ. It’s one of the main reasons I support Proposal 3 because I believe God gives us the freedom of choice. We can choose him every day or not choose him, again because it is a choice.
We don’t have to agree with the choices everyone makes but that doesn’t eliminate their right to choose. How we build our families or how we recover from trauma isn’t something that should be dictated by others. Proposal 3 will protect women’s freedom to make their own choices about their bodies and their reproductive health care without interference.
When a woman becomes pregnant, she never knows if she will have to make a decision that will affect her for the rest of her life. But she must be free to make the choice. That’s why I’m voting yes on Proposal 3.
