Hospital visitation restricted as respiratory illnesses increase
Eight hospitals in region effected
Corewell Health East, formerly Beaumont Health, is restricting visitation at its hospitals as it experiences high volumes of patients with respiratory illnesses, including respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.
The new restrictions go into effect at 8 a.m. Monday, for Corewell Health’s eight hospitals in the Detroit area.
Children who are 5 years old or younger may not visit patients in the hospitals unless there are extraordinary circumstances, such as severe illness of a parent or sibling, or an end-of-life situation.
A 6-year-old Macomb County boy died of complications of RSV in an Oakland County hospital Wednesday, Nov. 2, according to the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“Everyone can do their part to help stop or limit the spread of respiratory illnesses in our community. Please wash your hands regularly and, if you’re feeling sick, stay home. If you or a loved one experi
ences any life-threatening symptoms, such as trouble breathing, please seek medical attention immediately,” said Dr. Nick Gilpin, director of infection prevention for Corewell Health East..
In addition, Corewell Health East officials strongly encourage vaccinations, including a flu shot.
Friends and family of patients should also avoid visiting Corewell Health East hospitals if they have cold, flu or RSV symptoms, such as:
• High fever
• Cough
• Sneezing
• Shortness of breath
• Runny nose
• Wheezing
Corewell Health East operates hospitals in Royal Oak, Troy, Farmington Hills, Dearborn, Trenton, Taylor, Wayne and Grosse Pointe.
