Sentence handed down in hospital rape case

-

A Detroit man accused of raping a teen psychiatric patient at Pontiac General Hospital was ordered to spend a year in jail after pleading no contest to amended charges. Kevin Darcell Blanks, 56, entered his plea on Oct. 10 before Oakland County Circuit Judge Daniel O’Brien to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct — incapacitated victim in exchange for three counts of third-degree criminal sexual assault being dropped. He was sentenced Nov. 7. A plea deal with prosecutors called for five years probation and no additional jail time, but the judge sentenced Blanks to a year in jail, with credit for 102 days served as of the sentencing date. The plea deal, known as a “Killebrew agreement” with the prosecutor, allowed for Blanks to withdraw his plea if the judge sentenced him outside the agreement. Blanks chose to proceed with the plea anyway. Blanks was working as a mental health technician at Pontiac General Hospital when the offense occurred last July. He was subsequently fired. Along with the year in jail, Blanks was sentenced to serve five years probation after he’s released.
