‘Six,’ ‘Company’ to kick off Broadway In Detroit’s 2023-24 subscripti­on season

Broadway in Detroit on Thursday announced its 2023-24 subscripti­on season, with seven shows coming to the Fisher Theatre and Detroit Opera House.

“We are thrilled to announce our 61st Broadway In Detroit season,” said Jamie Budgett, Broadway In Detroit's general manager, in a statement. “Detroiters are really going to love the amazing season we've put together…”

Kicking off the season will be the Tony Award winning musical, “Six,” a comedic retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII — presented as a pop concert. The new original show —running May 23 through June 11 — won 23 awards in the 202½022 Broadway season, including the Tony Award for Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics) and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.

This gender-swapped revival of the Stephen Sondheim classic won five Tony Awards, including Best Revival, directed by Marianne Elliott (War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Angels in America). The show follows Bobbie as she navigates single life in her mid-30s in New York City, featuring award-winning songs “You Could Drive a Person Crazy,” “The Ladies Who Lunch,” “Side by Side by Side” and the iconic “Being Alive.”

Mrs. Doubtfire

Everyone's favorite Scottish nanny is headed to Detroit in an internatio­nally acclaimed new hit musical critics call “wonderful, heart-warming, and laughout-loud funny” (Manchester Evening News) and “a feel-good, family-friendly comedy that delivers” (The Hollywood Reporter). Based on the beloved film and directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, Mrs. Doubtfire tells the hysterical and heartfelt story of an out-of-work actor who will do anything for his kids.

Wicked

When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptiona­lly popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikelies­t of friendship­s… until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbir­d

Called “the most successful American play in Broadway history” by “60 Minutes,” Aaron Sorkin's adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork, “To Kill a Mockingbir­d,” heads to Detroit in March. New York Magazine calls it “a real phenomenon. Majestic and incandesce­nt, it's filled with breath and nuance and soul.” With direction by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, the show has quickly become “one of the greatest plays in history” (NPR).

The season will include one additional Fisher Theatre show to be announced at a further date. All show dates are subject to change.
