Symposium to be offered for young breast cancer survivors

Registrati­on is underway for a free symposium for young breast cancer survivors on Jan. 14.

The symposium is designed for health care providers and those who experience­d cancer under the age of 45.

It will be held from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and will be offered virtually and at Gilda’s Club locations in Royal Oak, St. Clair Shores and Detroit. Gilda’s Club is a cancer support group.

The symposium will feature keynote speaker Dr. Catalina Lawsin, a licensed clinical psychologi­st who will talk about reclaiming sexuality after cancer, with a focus on common sexual changes after cancer.

Other topics include fertility concerns, financial toxicity, diet after cancer, cancer myths, genetic cancer and medical care for post treatment survivors.

The symposium is sponsored by the Program for Breast Cancer in Young Adults, Karmanos Cancer Institute and Gilda’s Clubs of Detroit. A grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded it.
