Psych evaluation ordered for man accused of torture, rape and more
A Pontiac felon who had an hours-long standoff with law enforcement at an apartment complex after allegedly holding a woman at gunpoint — sexually assaulting and beating her — has been referred for a competency evaluation. At a Nov. 14 hearing in 50th District Court, Judge Jeremy Bowie ordered forensic testing for Roderick Harris, 23, who’s been jailed since his arrest earlier this month.
Harris is charged with criminal sexual conduct, torture, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, felonious assault, unlawful imprisonment and first degree home invasion for an alleged incident at the Spring Lakes Apartments on Auburn Road in Pontiac. According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement had arrived at the complex to arrest him on Nov. 2 for the alleged attack on the woman that reportedly happened Oct. 26.
As they moved in to take Harris into custody, he was reportedly seen racking a weapon and the stand-off ensued, lasting for three and a-half hours. During that time, Harris reportedly made his way through apartment homes, crawling across rafters in his attempt to elude law enforcement. He eventually surrendered.
During the stand-off, 10 apartment units were evacuated, the sheriff’s office said.
Harris has prior felony convictions for carrying a concealed weapon and felonious assault. He also has another case pending in 50th District Court for assaulting/resisting/obstructing police, domestic violence and interfering with electronic communication from an alleged Sept. 16 incident in Pontiac.
