Tuesday Musicale of Greater Pontiac to host concert featuring 2024 award winners
Tuesday Musicale of Greater Pontiac invites the public to a Sunday afternoon performance of the 2024 award winners of the Dora Dawson and Rosamond Haeberle musical competitions. The event will begin at 3 p.m., March 10, at the Central United Methodist Church, 3882 Highland Road, Waterford Township.
Throughout the 100 year history of Tuesday Musicale, the organization has always supported student involvement in the world of music. Since the student competitions began, thousands of dollars have been awarded to help young students further their musical education.
Mary Ann LaMonte announced that cellist Nicholas Callcut is the Dora Dawson winner and will receive $4,000 to aid in his plans to continue his musical education. A third year cello performance major at Oakland University, he studies with Úna O’Riordan, cellist and instructor. Callcut is minoring in Music Theory and plans to pursue cello at a graduate level. He has played with the University Chamber Orchestra, the Oakland, Rochester, and Saginaw Bay symphonies and at engagements in the metro-Detroit area. He teaches at the Rochester Conservatory of Music as well as coaches cello in the Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony. Callcut is grateful for this award and hopes to share much more music with audiences in the future.
Sandra DeRemer will introduce Catherine Hechtman, the $4,000 Rosamond Haeberle piano award winner. She began piano lessons at 7 years of age and now after 17 years, is a 2023 graduate of Oakland University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. While at the university, her teacher was Tian Tian, associate professor of Piano. Hechtman is currently teaching at Expressions Music Academy while preparing plans for future schooling with the long term goal of a DMA, (Doctor of Musical Arts). At this time she is auditioning for Master’s programs in piano performance and considering a double major with music theory. In March, she will be presenting a paper that she wrote for a theory class, at the Women in Music: An Interdisciplinary Conference. Hechtman will be finalizing study plans in April after the conclusion of the application and audition process.
