A Rochester woman faces multiple felonies after police say she became infatuated with a man at a gym she visits and put tracking devices on his and his Hazel Park girlfriend’s cars before attacking her.

Police said they believe suspect Jie Yu, 52, learned where the 35-year-old Hazel Park woman lived after tracking the man.

Hazel Park Police Chief Brian Buchholz said the suspect had a handgun when she showed up outside the woman’s house while the younger woman was in her vehicle with the driver’s window down Friday morning.

“The victim was in her driveway talking on her cellphone,” Buchholz said. “The suspect had a red bag similar to what DoorDash delivery people use and first asked the victim about an address.”

The suspect walked away but soon returned, and struck the woman in the face with a 9mm Glock handgun, police said.

“The suspect at some point slid the slide on the weapon, causing a live 9mm round from the gun to fall on the ground outside the victim’s vehicle,” said Buchholz.

Police officers and detectives had little information to go on after the Hazel Park woman called to report the assault, which turned into a multiple-felony case after they worked overtime through the weekend to unravel what they said was a convoluted series of crimes.

Yu is jailed on $1 million cash bond following her arraignment Tuesday in Hazel Park 43rd District Court.

She is charged with felonious assault and aggravated stalking, fiveyear felonies, two counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of crime, each a two-year felony, carrying a concealed weapon, a five-year felony, and a misdemeanor charge of illegally using a motor vehicle tracking device.

“We definitely feel this is a very dangerous woman,” Buchholz said. “This was a planned (assault) to scare the victim from being with her boyfriend.”

The Hazel Park woman had just returned from her boyfriend’s house when she was attacked Friday, police said

After Yu struck the woman in the face with the gun she fled in a Ford F-150 pickup truck, police said. Yu said nothing to the woman as the suspect attacked her, police added.

Hazel Park officers tracked down surveillance video from businesses and homes, and got a license plate number to the F-150. The listed owner of the vehicle is Yu’s husband, from whom she is separated, in Auburn Hills.

Police then got a search warrant for Yu’s home in Rochester and said they discovered tracking codes for the devices they later found attached to the vehicles owned by the man, in his 30s, and his girlfriend.

Hazel Park detectives interviewed the suspect on Friday and Saturday.

“She admitted being at the victim’s (driveway) and threatening her,” Buchholz said. “She admitted to an infatuation with the man, causing her to be jealous and coming up with a plan to harm the victim.”

As the investigation got underway, neither the man nor his girlfriend had any idea of what caused the assault, or why someone would put tracking devices on their vehicles, police said.

Then police showed a picture of the suspect to the man.

“He recognized her as someone from the gym he goes to,” Buchholz said, adding that the man had no personal relationship with the suspect.

Yu has no prior criminal history.

Buchholz singled out detectives and patrol officers who worked long hours over the weekend to complete the investigation of the complicated case.

“I’m extremely proud of the work they did putting this case together,” Buchholz said. “They sacrificed time with their families over the Easter weekend to do the investigation” that resulted in charges being issued by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.”
