LIVING WELL

For Your Health and Well-Being

- BY MCKENZIE MILLIS

For nearly 50 years, Shell Point Retirement Community has been providing seniors a gracious retirement lifestyle along with the stability and peace of mind that comes with the assurance of lifecare designed to meet their needs. The comprehensive lifecare offered at Shell Point ensures that residents have access to a full range of health and wellness options and amenities.

This diversity of services provides a continuum of care, from assisted living to short-term rehabilitation and long-term inpatient support, as well as memory care and hospice. “Each facility and program is designed specifically to welcome senior adults, get them healthy, and get them back to the best quality of life possible,” says Dr. Roger Hirchak, vice president of medical services at Shell Point.

A Five-Star Healthcare Tradition The Larsen Pavilion, an on-site 219-bed skilled nursing facility, is an integral part of healthcare at Shell Point. The Medicare-approved facility offers personalized and compassionate care in a beautiful waterfront setting and welcomes individuals from anywhere in Southwest Florida.

Recently, the facility earned a coveted five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, placing it in the top 10 percent of the best nursing facilities in the nation. “The five-star rating confirms our resident care and quality are among the best based on national ratings, which is not easy to obtain,” says Sherry Brown, director of skilled nursing and Larsen Pavilion administrator.

Effective Rehabilitation Recovery Welcoming individuals from outside of Shell Point and residents living within the community, the Rehabilitation Center provides physical, occupational and speech therapy.

Resident Dick Wright experienced success after a complete hip replacement in 2012. “I didn’t just ‘do’ physical therapy,” stressed Wright, “I enjoyed it. The Rehabilitation Center is bright, friendly and clean—a positive, encouraging place to receive therapy.”

Accessible Medical Team While it is rare for most retirement communities to employ a single staff physician, Shell Point has five full-time physicians and three ARNPs. Plus, an array of specialty physicians, ranging from cardiology to orthopedics, see patients directly at Shell Point. This affords the opportunity for specialized care without the need for patients to travel.

“Shell Point residents are actively involved in monitoring and maintaining their health. This attitude comes from the culture of wellness that Shell Point creates,” says Dr. Valeriy Sabodash, of Neurology Specialists.

Supportive Living Everyone wants to remain healthy and active during retirement. The supportive services found in assisted living can ease the strain of daily tasks while maintaining the highest level of independence possible. Shell Point offers three assisted living facilities for both residents and individuals residing outside the community: The Springs, The Arbor and King’s Crown.

A Lifestyle of Wellness Beyond healthcare, Shell Point’s LifeQuest program promotes active aging and emphasizes the six dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, educational, community and social, and natural environment.

“The LifeQuest program has inspired me to stay active, and I would pass along this inspiration,” says Lenny Wodarczyk, resident and wellness enthusiast. “No matter what, find what interests you, and get as involved as you can.”
