Don’t be fooled. Most Mex­i­can dishes in Southwest Florida are really Tex-Mex, which is great, but it’s more a blend­ing of cul­tures and recipes. Monarca’s Au­then­tic Mex­i­can Cuisine Bar & Grill in Cape Co­ral, how­ever, is pure Mex­i­can cuisine of beef and chicken selec­tions, but also seafood dishes of shrimp, snap­per and scal­lops. The own­ers are from Pa­cific Coast Mex­ico, which ac­counts for a deeper se­lec­tion of seafood in the de­light­ful menu. The set­ting is also part of the Monarca’s ex­pe­ri­ence, carved wood booths and doors, a metal-art ex­te­rior—and also ac­ces­si­ble by boat. Tor­tillas and chips are made in-house, as are the sal­sas and pico. The Monar­cha’s shrimp Aztec cock­tail is a fa­vorite; as is a spe­cialty Mi­choa­can dish of a corn tor­tilla with beans, onions, tomatillo sauce and tip steak.
