Reef Expansion Off New York Coast
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced the deployment of materials to create a new marine habitat at Hempstead Reef as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to develop a stronger, more diverse marine ecosystem and provide shelter for fish species and other marine life off New York’s coast. Hempstead Reef is a 744-acre site located 3 nautical miles off Long Island’s South Shore, in depths of up to 72 feet.
To plan trips to a New York State reef site, a map, site coordinates and additional information on New York’s artificial reefs are available at dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/ artificialreefbrochure.pdf
New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation asks that everyone planning to visit one of New York’s artificial reefs first become familiar with the state’s current recreational saltwater fishing regulations.
