Reef Ex­pan­sion Off New York Coast

New York Gov. An­drew Cuomo re­cently an­nounced the de­ploy­ment of ma­te­ri­als to cre­ate a new ma­rine habi­tat at Hemp­stead Reef as part of the state’s on­go­ing ef­forts to de­velop a stronger, more di­verse ma­rine ecosys­tem and pro­vide shel­ter for fish species and other ma­rine life off New York’s coast. Hemp­stead Reef is a 744-acre site lo­cated 3 nau­ti­cal miles off Long Is­land’s South Shore, in depths of up to 72 feet.

New York’s Depart­ment of En­vi­ron­men­tal Con­ser­va­tion asks that ev­ery­one plan­ning to visit one of New York’s ar­ti­fi­cial reefs first be­come fa­mil­iar with the state’s cur­rent recre­ational salt­wa­ter fish­ing reg­u­la­tions.
