TRUCK FULL OF MIGRANTS FOUND

54 people held in wake of wild night on N. Side

-

It was one of those things you wouldn’t expect in a quiet residential neighborhood.

Staffers Jacob Beltran, Peggy O’Hare and Elizabeth Zavala focused on the Leland Terrace subdivision after unauthorized migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Brazil were discoved a tractor-trailer parked in an alley.

Fifty-four people were apprehended, including the truck driver. Six people were hospitalized for minor injuries.

A couple living in the neighborhood were skeptical that only 54 people were involved in the incident and speculated that some of the migrants might have escaped.

The woman, a nurse, said some of the people who tried to flee as authorities arrived suffered broken limbs when they fell or tried to jump fences.

Zavala reported officials were sorting through the detained migrants, seeking to determine which ones would be considered material witnesses in a criminal case against the suspected driver, Gerardo Javier Carreon, 36, of Laredo.
