ANTONIAN RISES AGAIN
Antonian, bolstered by two state championships and nine district titles, won the Dan
Cook Cup as the top overall high school sports program in the Express-News Area for the 2017-18 school year.
It is the second Cook Cup title for Antonian and first since grabbing the top prize in 2011-12. The Apaches compiled 112 points, winning state crowns in volleyball and boys cross country and district titles, shared or outright, in volleyball, boys basketball, baseball, girls soccer, girls cross country, girls basketball, boys track, girls track and boys soccer.
Reagan, which won the honor as the area’s top sports program last year, was second with 106 points.
This is the 16th year for the Cook Cup to be awarded. Churchill won the first crown in 2002-03.
The 2017-18 Express-News athletes of the year are Tre’Bien Gilbert of Judson (track) and Brooke Vestal of New Braunfels Canyon (softball and volleyball).

Rundown: Tre’Bien Gilbert won the 110-meter and 300meter hurdles at the UIL Class 6A state track and field championships. His time in the 300 hurdles (36.18 seconds) set a city record, while his 13.53 in the 110 hurdles was a personal best. Both times were No. 2 nationally in the country.
In addtion to the hurdles, Gilbert ran anchor on the Rockets’ 1,600 relay, which finsihed fourth at state. Gilbert’s efforts helped carry Judson to a second-place finish in the 6A team standings at state.
Gilbert, who missed most of last sesaon with an injury, also won the 300 hurdles and finished second in the 300 hurdles at Texas Relays.
The Express-News named Gilbert as its boys track athlete of the year for 2018. Gatorade honored him as its 2017-18 Texas boys athlete of the year for track and field.
Also considered for E-N honor: Reagan’s Cal Carver (baseball) and Poth’s Jake Lamberth (track and field).
