This week’s specials
Here’s what we’re looking forward to in the next seven days:
Tuesday
Wanna get an early start on the Fourth festivities? Helotes’ Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks actually happens a day early. Besides the fireworks, the blowout includes patriotic music from the Helotes Area Community Band, children’s activities, food vendors and — perhaps best of all — free hot dogs, apple pie and ice cream while supplies last.
6-10 p.m., Helotes City Hall grounds, 12951 Bandera Road, helotes-tx.gov.
Wednesday
The city of San Antonio’s official Fourth of July celebration will include games, food, carnival rides and, of course, fireworks. This year’s free party will offer familyfriendly fitness activities, including a half-mile walk around Woodlawn Lake at 9:45 a.m. and a fun Zumba session. The Selena tribute band Bidi Bidi Banda and the Air Force Band of the West are set to perform just before the fireworks extravaganza at 9 p.m.
8 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Woodlawn Lake Park, 1103 Cincinnati Ave. saparksfoundation.org .
Monday
Wednesday
Enjoy fireworks among the flowers at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. Visitors are encouraged to pack a meal and enjoy a picnic in the garden. Members get in free; general admission applies to all other guests.
5:30-9:30 p.m., San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston Place, sabot.org
Urban-15’s latest edition of its “Hidden Histories” video series is “Neighborhood Histories of Removal and Resistance.” The screening, curated by Marisol Cortez, delves into San Antonio’s history of removing neighborhoods. Heywood Sanders, a public administration professor at UTSA, and Rodolfo Rosales, a retired UTSA political science professor, will provide additional commentary.
7 p.m., Urban-15 studio, 2500 S. Presa Ave. Free; watch it online at urban15.org/live-stream
Thursday
Green Jelly, Bill Manspeaker’s bizarre band, had an MTV hit in the early ’90s with the heavy metal fairy tale “Three Little Pigs.” (Future Tool member Danny Carey was the band’s drummer, and Maynard James Keenan sang the little pigs’ part.) Manspeaker is working on a new Green Jelly album, “Garbage Band Kids,” with songs such as “Marty the Weirdo” and “Khaos: Destroyer of the Universe” that are still heavy, still strange. Or, as Manspeaker puts it in a statement: “27 years and 202 band members later, Green Jello still sucks.”
8 p.m.. Fitzgerald’s, 437 McCarty. $10 in advance via eventbrite.com, $15 door. Facebook: fitzgeraldsbar
