Rundown: Vestal was hampered by injury for a portion of the season, but when it mattered she was at her best.

She hit a game-winning home run and combined for a no-hitter in New Braunfels Canyon’s 2-0 win over Warren in the Region IV-6A final, earning her team a berth into the UIL Class 6A state tournament. The Cougarette­s had lost in the regional final in each of the previous three seasons, but got over the hump this year. They lost to Humble Atascocita 5-3 in the state final, losing a late lead. Vestal had a 16-2 record with a 0.89 earned-run average and 128 strikeouts in 86 2⁄ innings. She batted

3 .471 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs. She was the E-N player of the year, the second time she captured the award. She was the recipient as a freshman in 2015.

In volleyball, Vestal had 58 kills, a .201 hitting percentage and 42½ blocks for Canyon, which lost in bidistrict to Region IV-6A champion O’Connor.
