Police ID man accused of stealing EMS truck, fleeing
Police have identified the man accused of stealing a San Antonio EMS truck, running over a person on a Bird scooter and leading officers on a chase that ended up shutting down a portion of Interstate 35 last week.
Ruben Cuellar, 26, faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft of property between $30,000 and $150,000 and evading arrest. He was booked into the Bexar County Jail, with bail set at $160,000.
According to San Antonio police, paramedics responding to a call for a distressed person at a Starbucks on St. Mary’s and Houston around 8 a.m. Thursday left their Ford F-150 truck running outside while they tended to the victim.
Seizing on the opportunity, Cuellar jumped inside and took off, said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus. Police ended up chasing him to the Northeast Side, where he crashed on Loop 1604, according to reports.
Cuellar is accused of running over 26-year-old Nathan Cortez, who was not seriously injured.
