Po­lice ID man ac­cused of steal­ing EMS truck, flee­ing

Po­lice have iden­ti­fied the man ac­cused of steal­ing a San An­to­nio EMS truck, run­ning over a per­son on a Bird scooter and lead­ing of­fi­cers on a chase that ended up shut­ting down a por­tion of In­ter­state 35 last week.

Ruben Cuel­lar, 26, faces charges of ag­gra­vated as­sault with a deadly weapon, theft of prop­erty be­tween $30,000 and $150,000 and evad­ing ar­rest. He was booked into the Bexar County Jail, with bail set at $160,000.

Ac­cord­ing to San An­to­nio po­lice, paramedics re­spond­ing to a call for a dis­tressed per­son at a Star­bucks on St. Mary’s and Hous­ton around 8 a.m. Thurs­day left their Ford F-150 truck run­ning out­side while they tended to the vic­tim.

Seiz­ing on the op­por­tu­nity, Cuel­lar jumped in­side and took off, said San An­to­nio Po­lice Chief Wil­liam McManus. Po­lice ended up chas­ing him to the North­east Side, where he crashed on Loop 1604, ac­cord­ing to re­ports.

Cuel­lar is ac­cused of run­ning over 26-year-old Nathan Cortez, who was not se­ri­ously in­jured.
