Texas St. continues to shine

Willie Jones III threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Texas State Bobcats to a 40-31 win against the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday at Georgia State Stadium in Atlanta.

Texas State (3-6, 1-4 Sun Belt) won its first conference game this season. Georgia State drops to 2-7, 1-4.

Jones, making his second consecutiv­e start in place of the injured Tyler Vitt, completed 21 of 26 passes for 325 yards and two touchdowns while running 14 times for 62 yards and another score. Jeremiah Haydel hauled in a 93-yard touchdown, with Javen Banks catching the other scoring pass. Caleb Twyford ran for 73 yards and a touchdown on eight car-

ries, while Anthony D. Taylor and Keenen Brown also found the end zone rushing.

Vitt, a freshman from MacArthur High School, was considered day-to-day with a shoulder injury after missing last week’s win against New Mexico State.

lege 0: In Sherman, the Tigers (6-3, 5-2 Southern Athletic Associatio­n) recorded its second shutout of the season and holding the Kangaroos (2-7, 2-5) to 245 yards of offense.

Peyton Tuggle scored Trinity’s first touchdown on a 16-yard run in the second quarter, and Chris Stewart found the end zone on a 14-yard pass from Wyatt Messex in the third.

Trinity closes its season with a home game against Berry at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Texas Lutheran 63, Sul

Ross State 20: In Seguin, Austin Mathews ran for 225 yards and a school-record five touchdowns as the Bulldogs (7-2, 6-2 American Southwest) cruised.

Mathews carried the ball 40 times and eclipsed 200 yards rushing for the second consecutiv­e game after racking up 213 last week in a win against Howard Payne.

Kyle Grona completed 23 of 33 passes for 245 yards with two touchdowns and an intercepti­on as Texas Lutheran amassed 519 yards of total offense — 255 passing and 264 rushing.

Texas Lutheran closes its season against Southweste­rn University at 1 p.m. Saturday in Georgetown.
