Groups holding food drive to help military members, vets

Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, the San Antonio Food Bank and Humana are sponsoring the March Out Hunger food drive through Veterans Day to help veterans and those in need.

Twenty five drop-off locations have been set up across the area to receive nonperishable food items until Nov. 11.

The goal is to collect 300,000 pounds of food, equal to 234,375 meals.

According to a Hunger in America study, 1-in-5 households served by a food bank has at least one person who served or is currently in the military.

The three organizations will sponsor a free Veterans Resource Fair on Nov. 17, featuring representatives from several veterans groups.

The campaign is part of the Humana Foundation’s Bold Goal initiative to part- ner with the community and medical clinics to make San Antonio 20 percent healthier by 2020.

In September, the foundation awarded $1.8 million to the food bank and Older Adults Technology Services to help local seniors living in isolation.
