Vitt’s 5 picks doom Bobcats’ upset bid

San Antonio Express-News (Sunday) - - College Football - STAFF REP ORT

Freshman quarterback Tyler Vitt threw five interceptions as Texas State fell 12-7 to Troy on Saturday in Troy, Ala.

The Trojans (9-2, 7-0 Sun Belt) have won seven straight against the Bobcats (3-8, 1-6) and 13 in a row in the conference.

Troy’s only scores were field goals. Tyler Sumpter connected from 36 yards in the first quarter, 47 and 42 yards in the second quarter, and 27 yards in the fourth quarter to give the Trojans a 12-0 lead. Anthony D. Taylor capped Texas State’s only scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats actually outgained the Trojans 284-220, but Troy did not have a turnover, while Texas State gave the ball away six times.

Troy quarterback Sawyer Smith completed 13 of 27 passes for 79 yards, and B.J. Smith paced the Trojans’ run game with 94 yards on 24 carries. Caleb Twyford was Texas State’s leading rusher with 73 yards on 11 carries.

Vitt finished the day 9-of-23 passing for 155 yards, plus seven carries for 23 yards in his first start since Oct. 20 against ULM. The MacArthur High grad missed two games because of an injury and had taken a back seat to sophomore Willie Jones III.

Jones threw for 438 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions while running for 172 yards and two scores as Texas State won both games Vitt missed, beating Georgia State and New Mexico State. But coach Everett Withers announced this week that Jones will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury that requires surgery.

On the year, Vitt has completed 101 of 165 passes for 1,026 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions, plus 71 carries for 198 yards and two scores on the ground.

Nikolas Daniels led Texas State’s defense with 16 tackles Saturday, while Bryan London II had 15.

Texas State closes its season against Arkansas State at 3 p.m. Saturday in San Marcos.
