Slaying suspect was ‘beefing,’ affidavit says
A 19-year-old male who police say opened fire on a man and woman Tuesday, resulting in the woman’s death, had been “beefing,” or arguing, with the other man, according to an arrest affidavit.
John Michael Zimmers Jr. was arrested Thursday night after a high-speed chase and faces charges of murder, drug possession and evading arrest.
Zimmers is accused in the shooting death of Gloria Stephanie Rodriguez, 36, at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday near Pecan Valley Drive and Pyle Street on the Southeast Side.
A witness told police that he, Rodriguez and another man were going to a nearby gas station to buy some items when he noticed a green SUV near the gas pumps, according to an arrest affidavit. Eventually, the SUV drove off and the group started walking home.
When they got to Pecan Valley Drive and Pyle Street they noticed the same SUV at a stop sign. All three crossed the street and kept walking, but the SUV drove up near them.
A gunman, later identified by witnesses as Zimmers, started shooting, striking Rodriguez, according to the affidavit. The SUV then sped off.
The witness told police that he had been Zimmers’ intended target, according to the affidavit.
Another man told police that Zimmers went to his house asking for help after the shooting. The affidavit states that Zimmers told this witness that he had been involved in a shooting but that it was Zimmers who had been shot at first and he was only returning fire.
Zimmers also told the witness he had been “beefing” with one of the men in the group, the affidavit states.
According to San Antonio police, officers searching for Zimmers spotted him about 11:45 p.m. Thursday near Pecan Valley Drive. An officer attempted a traffic stop and a chase ensued, police said.
Police said the chase reached speeds of 90 mph. Zimmers smashed into a civilian’s vehicle near Goliad Road and Pecan Valley Drive, authorities said.
After the collision, Zimmers darted into a nearby auto repair store, where he was detained by police, officials said. Paramedics took him and his passenger to a hospital for minor injuries.
The two adults in the civilian vehicle Zimmers crashed into were hospitalized, while the two children in the vehicle were unharmed.
