Two Hispanic journalists are honored
Antonio Guillen of Univision and National Public Radio’s Maria Hinojosa were honored Saturday night at the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists’ Scholarship and Awards Gala.
Guillen, winner of the Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism, is a five-time Emmy winner and the former host of a political show in Mexico.
The son of a newspaper man, Guillen immigrated to San Antonio in 1989 and has covered politics and crime in Mexico and the U.S.
Hinojosa received the association’s Corazón de Oro Award. The four-time Emmy winner and author of three books currently is the anchor and executive producer of NPR’s “Latino USA” and the founder of the nonprofit Futuro Media Group.
The award honors people whose achievements have been recognized nationally and who have made an impact on the U.S. Latino community.
Catholic Charities of San Antonio was honored for its work helping reunite Central American migrant children with their parents last summer after they were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Catholic Charities is the 13th recipient of SAAHJ’s Community Service Award.
The 21st annual gala, held at the Grand Hyatt, raised money for Bexar County students pursuing careers in journalism, media and communications.
Fourteen students received a total of $40,000 in scholarships from the association this year.
Students have been awarded nearly $500,000 in scholarships from SAAHJ in the past 21 years.
