Dems keep trying
Re: “Political priorities” Your Turn, Tuesday:
A reader asked, if the Democrats want to do something about gun violence, why don’t they do it every day, all day, rather than for just a few days after another horrific incident?
Since Sandy Hook, there have been so many mass shootings. In every case, the Democrats have cried out for something to be done, while the best the NRAbeholden Republicans have done is offer to keep the victims in their “thoughts and prayers.”
But finally, after the Democrats regained the majority in the House, in February (one month after taking office in January), they passed a bill aimed at tightening the background check process, with only eight Republicans joining the Democrats. That bill was sent to the Senate, where it has been languishing on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk. He won’t even bring it up for debate.
The answer to the question is not that the Democrats only bring it up after another mass shooting. Rather, they have continually called for action, but their voices are only amplified when the shooting is fresh in everyone’s mind. The ball is now in the Republicans’ court.
Stephen Carter, New Braunfels able and beneath him and his party. While Democrats rail against alleged racism and under-the-table political tactics by Republicans, he adds fuel to the fire with his tweet.
Robert Mendoza, Fort Worth to make road changes that help save lives. Of special note is that TxDOT will spend a majority of the money on improvements to reduce cases where reckless drivers lose control, swerve off the road and endanger others. Such cases, officially known as “departure incidents,” make up a large percentage of Texas vehicle accidents.
The candidates in the Democratic presidential debates make repeated rationalizations that advocate careening off the main road and heading into the left wing, socialist ditch. Do these qualify as “departure incidents”?
